Confidence for artists is something we talk about a lot inside Ignite, because so often the biggest obstacle to creating great artwork isn’t a lack of talent or technique.
It’s self-doubt.
Recently, we had a wonderful Confidence Session inside Ignite where we explored creativity, mindset, and the challenges many artists face throughout their drawing journey.
As we chatted, I found myself coming back to a thought that I’ve believed for a very long time:
It’s never really about the pencils.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I absolutely love coloured pencils. I love teaching techniques, helping artists improve, and seeing people create drawings they never thought possible.
But when I first picked up coloured pencils all those years ago, I wasn’t looking for a new hobby.
I was looking for a little bit of peace.
The Real Challenge Most Artists Face
So often, the biggest challenge isn’t learning how to draw.
It’s learning how to believe in yourself.
Over the years, I’ve seen the same thoughts appear again and again:
- “I’m not good enough.”
- “Mine doesn’t look like everyone else’s.”
- “I’m scared of getting it wrong.”
- “I’m not creative.”
Sound familiar?
I’ve watched countless artists start their journey feeling full of self-doubt, only to create artwork a few months later that they’re genuinely proud of.
So what changed?
Most of the time, it wasn’t a new pencil set. It wasn’t a different paper. It wasn’t a secret technique. It was the way they started thinking about themselves.
Every Mark You Make Is Uniquely Yours
One of the things I shared during the session is that every mark you make is uniquely yours.
Nobody else sees the world exactly as you do. Nobody else will create exactly the same drawing.
And that’s a good thing.
Your artwork is a reflection of your experiences, your personality, and your journey. That’s what makes it special.
Not perfection. Not flawless technique. Not whether someone else thinks it’s “good enough”.
Just you showing up, putting pencil to paper, and allowing yourself to create.
A Simple Mindset Shift To Try This Week
The next time you catch yourself thinking:
“This isn’t good enough.”
Try replacing it with:
“I’m learning.”
It might sound like a small change, but it’s a powerful one.
Learning leaves room for mistakes. Learning leaves room for growth. And learning allows you to enjoy the journey instead of constantly judging the destination.
A Final Reminder
You don’t have to be perfect.
You don’t have to have the best pencils.
You don’t have to know everything before you begin.
You simply need to start. Because trust me, you are far more capable than you think you are. And your creativity is worth making space for.
Keep drawing.
