Autumn is just around the corner and has a way of nudging us into new rhythms. The days grow shorter, the air turns crisp, and suddenly we find ourselves swapping sunny afternoons for cosy jumpers and cups of tea. And while summer might have tempted us to put our pencils down for a while, here’s the truth: your creativity doesn’t have an off-season. 🍂✏️

If you’ve ever found yourself stuck in self-doubt or whispering “I’m not good enough” as you look at your drawings, this one’s for you. Here are five gentle reminders every artist needs to hear this Autumn.

1. Mindset matters more than perfection

It’s so easy to zoom in on every little detail you think you got wrong. But here’s the truth: it’s not the “perfect pencil stroke” that makes your art powerful, it’s the mindset you bring to it. If you allow yourself to look at your work and say, “Wow, I did that!” you’ll unlock more joy, and growth, than nitpicking ever could.

2. Your inner voice is stronger than you think

The words you whisper to yourself are powerful. If you keep telling yourself you’re not ready, not talented, or not as good as someone else, guess what? You’ll start to believe it. This summer, make the choice to shift that voice. Try replacing “I can’t” with “I’m learning,” or “I’m not good enough” with “I’m improving every time I pick up a pencil.”

3. Your beliefs shape your art journey

Limiting beliefs can be sneaky. They often sound like facts:

  • “I never finish a piece.”
  • “I didn’t go to art school, so I can’t be successful.”
  • “I’m too old to start now.”

But these are just stories you’ve told yourself over time. When you flip those beliefs, when you choose to believe “I finish what I start” or “My art journey is valid at any age”, you open up possibilities you couldn’t see before.

4. Curiosity is your superpower

Sometimes the subjects or techniques you resist the most are the ones you need the most. (Yes, even the lizard drawing I swore I’d never do!) This summer, give yourself permission to explore something different: new surfaces, new pencils, new colours. Curiosity creates growth, and growth creates confidence.

5. Celebrate every step

Finished a portrait? Amazing. Sketched for 10 minutes? Brilliant. Even just sharpening your pencils and sitting at your desk counts. Progress is progress, and every step deserves recognition. The more you celebrate yourself, the more momentum you’ll create.

There’s no such thing as the “perfect” time to start – or restart -your creative journey. The right time is now. So this summer, give yourself permission to draw without judgment, explore with curiosity, and remind yourself every single day:

You are an artist, and you are more capable than you think.

You nailed it with the “I never finish what I start” I get to a certain point and I am not sure if I am afraid I will ruin something I like or if I don’t like it so don’t want to finish. I have enough unfinished art around here to keep me busy completing it for a year. Very few projects are completed.

Bonny, there’s truth in everything you say, l now repeat to myself PMA..Positive Mental Attitude! I have always done pencil drawings as a young girl, but work, marriage and having children, it never interested me, but since my first free tutorial l followed one of your free tutorials on Pinterest, I’ve never looked back, and joined ignite back in Jan, I’m now just about finished on my solo piece,Betty, one of our dogs, which I’ll post, when finished. I’m so proud of what I’ve achieved, all down to you, l also have my first commission to do shortly! It has given me so much pleasure and l feel as proud as punch and I’ve had so many compliments !!
