Hair has always been one of my favourite things to draw. There’s something incredibly satisfying about watching it slowly come to life as you build the colour, develop the values and finally add those little wispy flyaway hairs right at the very end.

The lovely thing is, creating realistic hair isn’t about drawing hundreds of individual strands. It’s about learning to see hair differently.

Learn to See Hair in a Whole New Way

One of the biggest lightbulb moments for me was realising that realistic hair starts with the bigger picture.

Instead of chasing every strand, we’ll look at the shapes of light and shadow that give the hair its form. Once those values are established, adding the finer details becomes so much easier.

We’ll also explore how your pencil strokes should follow the natural movement of the hair, helping you create softness, shine and realistic texture without the drawing becoming harsh or overworked.

We’ll be working on drafting film, one of my absolute favourite surfaces for drawing hair.

It allows us to build delicate layers, create beautiful luminous highlights and achieve wonderfully soft detail that’s difficult to recreate on traditional paper. If you’ve never used drafting film before, don’t worry -I’ll guide you through everything you need to know.

Techniques You’ll Use Again and Again

Although the workshop focuses on hair, the techniques you’ll learn don’t stop there.

The same principles can be applied to beautiful human hair, flowing horse manes, silky spaniel ears and long, luxurious fur. Once you understand how light, values and direction work together, you’ll start seeing these techniques in so many of your own drawings.

Spend the Day Drawing With Me

We’ll spend the day drawing together live on Zoom, and one of my favourite parts is being able to chat with you as we go. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the day, watch every stage develop in real time and enjoy drawing alongside a lovely group of fellow coloured pencil artists.

And if you can’t join live – or you’d simply like to revisit the techniques afterwards – you’ll receive the full HD replay to keep forever.
